The God of Thunder
Thunder in the form of a deity. He is generally depicted as a demonic figure surrounded by a ring of drums and holding drumsticks. He is counted among the followers of the Thousand-armed Kannon together with the god of wind.
Sugawara Michizane, worshiped as the god of scholarship, was demoted to a minor official of Dazaifu and subsequently died of despair.
However, after Michinae’s death, when his political adversaries successively met with unnatural deaths and the Imperial Palace was struck by lightning, it was he who was thought to be the god of thunder.
